YMCA Alternative Suspension is an out-of-school intervention program providing support to students who are disengaging from academics, being suspended, or going through the temporary expulsion process.

The goal is to successfully reintegrate students back into their academic surroundings with a new action plan. During a student’s stay with YMCA Alternative Suspension, we address the difficulties that may place youth at risk and create a support system through a strong academic focus.

Referrals to this program are only accepted from partner schools.

Student's Program Pathway

1) The referral
Stage one of Alternative Suspension's referral process begins when a school decides to refer the student to the program. The school then contacts a youth worker from the program to confirm the referral and set the date for the reintegration meeting. The school will contact the parent(s) and/or guardian(s) to inform them of the suspension and requests permission to complete the referral. The school will send the documentation and assigned schoolwork to the program. The youth worker will contact the parent(s)
2) Daily activities
The reintegration meeting attended by the student, parent(s) and/or guardian(s), the school and youth worker being stage three. After the meeting, the student will be referred to other programs and services in their community.Four to six weeks later, the program youth worker conducts a follow-up meeting with the student, parent(s) and/or guardian(s) and the school. Three months later, the program youth worker conducts another follow-up with the school to evaluate the degree of problematic behaviour shown by
