YMCA offers free facilities access to evacuees fleeing Alberta wildfires

EDMONTON, ALBERTA, May 5, 2023 — With extreme fire conditions in the province and the growing number of Albertans evacuated from their homes, many individuals and families are relocating to Edmonton and Red Deer.

To support evacuees, YMCA of Northern Alberta is offering community members that he been forced to evacuate free access to the four YMCA Health and Wellness centres in Edmonton and the Northside Community Centre YMCA in Red Deer. Individuals and families are welcome to access these locations free of charge for recreational use, showering, etc. during standard hours of operation.

Youth support program helps students serving suspensions in Grande Prairie

GRANDE PRAIRIE, Alberta, Aug. 24, 2022 — For many youth, succeeding in school or even staying in school can be a significant challenge. To support youth in the region, YMCA of Northern Alberta launched its popular Alternative Suspension program in Grande Prairie in March 2021. This school year, the program will be offered in the Grande Prairie Public School Division, Grande Prairie & District Catholic School Division and Peace Wapiti Public School Division.

Labour shortage among lifeguards, swim instructors a province-wide issue

EDMONTON, Alberta, June 21, 2022 — As summer approaches and families look forward to recreation at Edmonton’s swimming pools or the province’s many lakes, the issue of water safety comes to the forefront. But over the past year, pool and waterfront operators across the province have felt the strain of a major labour shortage when it comes to lifeguards and swim instructors.
