Every person has the right to a safe, secure home and the Y is committed to being a voice for those facing barriers to affordable housing, people experiencing homelessness and those at risk of homelessness.

Homeward Bound and Housing First programs focus on ending homelessness by providing permanent housing and follow-up support. 

What we do

Housing

Individuals and families who are experiencing homelessness are housed first, then given support to:

  • Address barriers, search for and identify appropriate housing
  • Establishing relationships with landlords, including mediating during times of conflict
  • Access resources and manage housing allowances
  • Assisting with setting up an apartment (furniture, household items, groceries)

Follow-up Support

Follow-up support workers assist participants in accessing resources to promote community integration, improve quality of life and foster independent living. A network of support will also be created to grow their life skills, support mental health needs, access medical services and more.

Accessing Housing Support

To access these housing support programs, individuals must

  • Have experienced three episodes of homelessness in one calendar year
  • Participate in Service Prioritization Decision Assistance Tool (SPDAT)
  • Agree to third-party rent payment
  • Agree to receive follow-up support in their home and community
  • Agree to be a good neighbour
